If you own or run a business, by law you’re personally responsible for making sure that the electrical equipment used in that business is safe; this includes business tools like computers and photocopiers, and everyday appliances like kettles and vacuum cleaners. Every type and size of business is covered by the legal legislation: it affects all offices, shops and factories; but also guest houses, rented accommodation, care homes, play groups, churches, etc.

If an accident happens and you haven’t taken adequate steps to ensure the safety of the equipment, you could get a hefty fine or suffer a prison sentence.

Fortunately, there’s a convenient and inexpensive way to test appliances that plug into a mains socket - Portable Appliance Testing (known as PAT testing).

At Direct Applications we follow the Institution of Electrical Engineers code of practice, use specialist equipment to carry out a number of tests on each of your appliances. Testing takes only a short time, usually on your own premises, so the disruption to your business will be negligible.

Please be aware- businesses are also responsible the safety of any electrical equipment they sell.

New appliances will be tested by the manufacturer, but if it’s second-hand or refurbished equipment, PAT testing will be essential.
