What is PAT testing and how does it effect your business?

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is a specialist area in which a suitably trained and qualified electrical expert following the IEE Code of Practice use their skills and a range of specialist equipment to ascertain the safety of all equipment using electrical plugs, through carrying out a number of tests on each electrical appliance. The appliance is then declared to be safe for use, or at fault; a certificate of compliance is issued and a written report is produced as a health and safety record for you to keep.

A PAT test certificate will give you the peace of mind that the electrical equipment in your workplace is safe to be used by you, your staff and clients.

Why should my electrical equipment be PAT tested?

The `Electricity at Work` 1989 regulation made it legal necessity that "All electrical systems must be maintained". When any appliance is connected to the electrical supply, it becomes part of your electrical system, which means you must maintain it by law.

If you don't have your equipment tested, your putting yourself, your staff and your clients at risk; ultimately, this could lead to future problems through the Health & Safety Executive, or through your insurance provider.

What type of appliances need to be tested?

All portable appliances. This means any piece of electrical equipment that is powered from a plug that is inserted into a wall socket; for example, your phone charger, the office kettle, an extension lead, an adaptor, a drill, hairdryer, PC, fridge .... the list is endless, Any of these items could cause an electric shock to the user, or be a fire risk to your business.

Having your items tested gives you the piece of mind that if the item continues to be kept in good working order and is handled appropriately, these risks are kept to a minimum.
